Beginners’ Spanish I (SPAN 201): Listening to Music

Brennan Fishler

To help connect with a piece of Spanish speaking culture I listened to some music by Kali Uchis, which is sung in a hybrid of the English and the Spanish language. The three songs that I listened to are called “telepatía”, which means telepathy in english. “Moonlight” and then “Dame Beso” which means give me kisses. All three of these songs can be found on youtube and include the lyrics in the description of the video. Karly Marina Loaiza or Kali Uchis the singer/songwriter was born on July 17th 1994 in Alexandria, Virginia USA made her debut in music with the album Drunken Babble in 2012.

One key difference I noticed between Kali’s music and typical English music that I listen to is the fast pace of her words even in her slower songs. The song telepatía is a slower pace romantic song but her words are very quickly spoken in it. This differs from English music because when English singers produce a slower love song their words are slow but in this Spanish song the words are spoken quite quickly. I found that the Spanish words said in this song were ones I was unfamiliar with, however I knew the conjugations that they came from because of content from class. For example the line “me dicen todo lo que estás pensando” in telepatía I understand that dicen is the the ellos/ellas/ustedes conjugation of the word decir. I was also glad to see some words that we learned in class such as “noches,de,día,que, cuando, estamos, hacer, quien.” telepatía was a song that I had always listened to but never truly understood what any of the Spanish words meant until I had read along with the lyrics while listening to the song. I found that in Spanish 201 learning the conjugations of the words helped me better understand the context of the songs.
