Beginners’ Spanish I (SPAN 201): Research Report – Event

Expo Latino is one of the largest Latin festivals in Canada, taking place from August 16 to 18 at Prince’s Island Park. The festival aims to introduce attendees to “la cultura española” (Spanish culture) and showcases Spanish traditions through “el baile” (dance), “la Música” (music), and “la comida auténtica” (authentic food). The event features both local and international dance groups, including Mambo Productions, Bachata Kiz Dance Co., Fit Dance – Dominican Dance Group, Montuno Dance Co., Dando Dance, Tango Calgary, and Havana Dance Studio. Mambo, a Cuban dance and music style, blends African and Cuban rhythms, while Bachata, which origitnated in the Dominican Republic, is know for its vibrant music and dance. Tango, coming from Argentina and Uruguay, is recognized for its dramatic expression. I discovered a variety of authentic Latin foods at the festival.

The festival showcased dishes from Minas Brazilian Stakehouse and Sabor a Perú, offering everything from rotisserie chicken to fresh ceviche. I learned about empanadas for the first time while reading about Expo Latino. These little pastries, which originate from Argentina, are filled with a variety of delicious ingredients such as beef, chicken, or cheese, all wrapped in a crispy, flaky crust. I also found out taht when Italian immigrants came to Argentina, they blended their culinary traditions with local flabors, resulting in the creation of empanadas. Expo Latino fosters cultural diversity and promotes understanding among various communities, allowing individuals to connect with Hispanic traditions. This celebration highlights the contributions of the Hispanic cummunity to Canada’s cultural landscape, enriching the nation’s diversity.
